Prof. J. E. Hilgard
Superintendent

Dear Sir,

I see that Mr. Farquhar accuses me of rejecting observations merely on account of their discordance without mentioning the rejection. I never do anything of the sort. Part of the observations he says I have rejected are not rejected. They are not noticed because they were extra observations which never entered into the scheme of the work. In other cases, observations have been thrown out irrespective of the values of the results, because I was dissatisfied with the method or circumstances. I am very averse to making alterations in the record and usually prefer to reject an observation altogether rather than do that.

Yours very respectfully,

C. S. Peirce
Assist.
