Letter from Charles S. Peirce to Carlile P. Patterson
(New York, 28.06.1877)

June 28

My dear Captain,

I am very sorry to learn that you have been ill. I hope by this time you are better. I myself am far from well & since the cause still subsists & must continue until Monday at least, I fear that I shall be seriously ill. The cause is that I haven't the

money to buy myself a meal, so that I have had to subsist for several days off casual crackers & cheese which I have picked up at the Century. Your letter of the 24th saying that you had directed Dr. Porter to send me $750 gives me hopes of getting something early in August. That will mostly have to be payed

away at once for July expenses & as I don't think that Dr. Porter will consent to send me any more before September at earliest, I should be in similar distress again but that before that time I shall have another string to bow, as I hope. I desire to hold on to the Survey but I can't starve. You see I rather imprudently calculated upon having something beyond

the $200 which I have drawn about the 20th. Here in New York, one is expected to have credit & if one doesn't pay every bill of $100 or so on the instant it is thought very strange. On that account I think it rather hard that an exception to the Regulations should be made in my case in regard to drawing on the disbursing agent. The 25 cts. which he pretends he can't charge, I had rather pay than not have enough to eat. If you could persuade him to send me a V on Monday so that I could get a dinner on

Tuesday, it would be very acceptable.

Yours faithfully

C. S. Peirce
