My dear President Eliot,

If I can express a preference for one course rather than another on your part, without in any degree yielding my claims upon the University, then I will remark that as there are various references in the text of my Photometric Researches to the appended catalogues, of which there were to be two, one for magnitudes & the other for colours, I think

it would be preferable to insert a few pages of what has been printed of the first of these, simply to show what it is like.

The plate in Bien's hands should not be forgotten. It will be best not to send transfers but regular impressions to be bound up with the book.

I observe that you seem to speak as if it were optional with the observatory to go on with the Catalogue or not. This surprises me.

Yours very truly

C. S. Peirce

C. W. Eliot, Esq.

President Harvard College

etc. etc. etc.
