Saturday, Sept. 8 1877

Dearest Charlie,

I cannot let your birthday pass unnoticed & only wish I had it in my power to send you a sum worthy your acceptance. Since I have no means of knowing what memento of my love would be the thing for you in your present manner of life I send this cheque, hoping you can find something in New York to exactly fill a

vacancy in your belongings which you will like to see supplied by your Mother's hand. I wish it was four times as much -but we have so much to do with this poor money that it is imperative that there is little left for our dearest pleasures. So take this trifle dear with my best wishes & my true love. I am very glad you have found a pleasant place in the neighborhood of N. Y.  where you can take an occasional refreshment of two or three days, pure country air

I have been with Helen at Hingham a good deal, but she with Will & the children are with us now. They are having the Irving St. house put in order for them & will go there in about a week. stay with us. I hope your health does not suffer from the confinement & hard work to which you are subjected. I mean since you will not come & see us, to make a little journey to New York when the weather is cooler to see how you are & how you live. Shall you be glad to see me?

            With much love,
            ever dear Charlie
            most truly yours,

                       Mother
