J. E. Hilgard
Superintendent

Dear Sir,

Having received the enclosed letter from Mr. Chaney, I have replied that I have referred it to you with an expression of my concurrence in its suggestions. I would respectfully suggest that the comparisons I have made are not sufficient to give the yard with sufficient accuracy for the U. S. Standard.

I have made the comparisons of Nº 57 and 58. They are very concordant and make Nº 57 about almost exactly 4 divisions of the micrometer the shorter. This accords with the comparisons of 1853. But the bisection of me of the lines of Nº 57 is a matter of possible doubt, and in my opinion, the yard in the

United States ought not to rest upon comparisons of this last. Either the bar Nº 11 should be taken, or better, a new yard should be compared with Nº 1, after the completion of the new comparator.

Yours very respectfully,

C. S. Peirce
Asst.

P. S. I think it would be an excellent thing if General Cutts could make comparisons of Nº 57 with Nº 1 in the autumn.

Note

Bulks of thermometers kept as nearly as possible in the same plane in both positions.

Observations made with a lens only, at the temperature of the air of the Room, and of the water in the room.

Sketch of Calorimeter being an axis in which bulbs were enclosed.
