7 Janvier.
Rome

Looked at Castellani's & Pierret's jewelry. Cheat of 5th more & more evident!

Vatican. Sixtine chapel an overrated affair. Stanzas, the gems. Loggie all gone. Saw pictures also.

Evening C[harles] called on Barnards. Z[ina] packed trunks on her new principle.

8 Janvier.

Left Rome 10 AM. Arrived Florence 101/2 PM. Beautiful time at Hotel de l'Europe. Z[ina] in very bad spirits at leaving. Travelled 2nd class. Horrid says C[harles]. Very comfortable says Z[ina]. Went by way of Pisa. Poor dinner at Orbetello.

Went to Hotel Bonciani. Dreadful dreadful. Slept in our clothes. To be called at 4AM. Sheets so fearfully damp that the damp penetrated through our clothes.
