11 Janvier.
Left Turin 1 PM. Arrived Susa 3 ½ PM. Left Susa 8 ½ PM.

Hotel people didnt' call us at 4! Called us at 5. No time for breakfast, scarcely to dress. Missed first train at 5.20. Z[ina] had left locket & had to return to Hotel for it. So missed 2nd train at 5.50. C[harles] horribly vexed. Horrid day. Worst we've had. Turin a nasty hole, says C[harles]. Good enough says the all rational (if you dont' make yourself miserable on purpose, wh. we did).

At Susa found Fell's Mountain railway suspended. Fell discovery. So took place in diligence and took dinner at railway buffet. After a horrid afternoon at the dismal station, started on fine moon light night for St. Michel. On runners. very comfortable. Splendid station at Turin.

12 Janvier.
Mt. Cenis. St. Michel & Road to Geneve.

At about 2 or 3 o'clock changed to wheels. No foot warmers. Dreadful cold. Suffered from it, fatigue & neighbors' late onions. Arrived at St. Michel 6 ¼ AM just in time to miss the train. Damn!

Went to Hotel de l'Union. Dirty little town. Pretty poor inn. C[harles] had an extraordinarily violent cold. Both of us played out. Started at 3 PM for Geneva. Great delays on road. Dined at Culoz at 8 ½ PM. Left at 10.20. Arrived in Geneva about 2½ AM. Z[ina] almost dead. Went to Hotel des Bergues. Badroom. C[harles] got to bed at 4 ½ AM.
