Letter from Benjamin Peirce to Carlile P. Patterson
(Cambridge, MA, 13.07.1876)

Spanish translation & annotations

Cambridge 13 July 1876

My very dear chief,

Charlie is now at work in London so that I presume he will be able to close up work in a few weeks. I suspect from Zina’s letters that he is fast recovering. [il.] I have no doubt that a good rest will do him good. He will enough? go in preparations for publication after his return without overworking himself.

I also infer from Zina’s letters that his accounts will look much better when everything is separ??? up —  and that there will be a balance for the Baring’s from his own private means — which are now confounded [for] us with his official expenses.

I have not written about the sending out of the copies of the Binary Algebra —because it is just a [il.] anything which seems to use [il.] up useless let [il.] to [il.] out a list from Memories of Academy etc and send it to him for approval. Hilgard’s advice will be of great value.

If it be not too much trouble please to ask Samuel Hein Esq if my account reached him for last month.

The last reduction was very cruel —but we must admit?— and of course I am prepared to hear my portion of the reduction. Will you say what it is and leave it to me to arrange it, or with you acclaim it yourself? In either case, you will find

no trouble from me.

Most sincere and faithfuly

Your [il.] friend

Benjamin Peirce

By the bye, how does this reduction affect your publication possibilities. Have you still desire to have the Uranus and Neptune investigation when it is completed. There is much work and it will not soon be done so that immediate decision is not needed. [il.] I more? hand at it
