Letter from John H. C. Coffin to Charles S. Peirce
(Washington, 17.05.1876)

Spanish translation & annotations

1876, May 17

Dear Sir,

I have today received your letter of March 31, with Obliquity, Moon's Librations & c for 1879. The month's delay in its reaching me is probably owing to your  directing it to "Washington D. C." without adding "U. S. Of America".

In your letter of Feb. 7 you said you would send me these two pages "before the end of the month". Not receiving them & the page of Saturn's Ring, I wrote you on the 7th of April that I must put the preparation of these pages into other hands. They have all been computed & stereotyped. But the publication of the Ephemeris for 1879 has been

delayed more than two months for the want of them.

I have found moreover that $100 would be a very liberal compensation for the work required in the preparation of these three pages, & is all that I can hereafter allow, especially in the expectation of reduced appropriations; & also that for Saturn's Ring, beginning in 1873, you have given 360º -u instead of u, & consequently an erroneous value of u.

Very respectfully yours,

J. H. C. Coffin

C. S. Peirce Esq.
