Letter from Arthur Searle to Charles S. Peirce
(Cambridge, MA, 06.07.1876)

Spanish translation & annotations

July 6, 1876

Dear Sir,

Your letter of June 25 is at hand. I will see the lithographies soon, to arrange for sending you the impressions of the engravings of the photometer and its observatory which you want for transfer in Leipzig.

On looking now the copy of my letter to you of last August, I cannot find that it refers at all to the preparation of a preface, but only to that of a title-page, for your work; and that only on the assumption that the Sturgis Fund would be unavailable for the publication, so that the Bache or Quincy Fund would be drawn upon. The mention of Professor Winlock spoken of is that which appears to be required by the restriction of publications from the Quincy Fund to the "astronomical observations of the principal observer;" and if Professor Winlock's name was to be placed upon the title-page, in compliance with this restriction, it would of course be proper that his friends here should have an opportunity of offering the manner in which the title-page was drawn up. I never thought of such a thing as a preface to the work by any one but you. As matters have turned out, the Sturgis Fund is available, and the whole question drops.

Yours respectfully

Arthur Searle
