lived, with some of the Astronomical Engravings, in support of which the money was actually used. I have had several conversations upon this subject with Professor Peirce, who has written to Professor Henry to suggest the acceptance of a separate edition of the twelve engravings which relate to the sun as an equivalent for the intended work. It is not certain, however, that this will satisfy Professor Henry. Among the possible courses of which I have talked with Professor Peirce, one is the withdrawal of the appropriation, and its renewal in a form which would make it applicable to your memoir. But whatever course is taken, it will be necessary to hold the income of the Sturgis Fund (which is less encumbered by conditions than that of the Quincy Fund) in reserve for the present, to meet whatever demand Professor Henry may hereafter make, in a manner satisfactory to him and creditable to the Observatory.

Your work, then, must be paid for either by the Bache Fund or by the Quincy Fund, probably by the latter. Now as the Quincy Fund is for the publication of the “astronomical observations of the principal observer,” we must take some precautions in applying it to the publication of a memoir by an assistant. The only course which I am at liberty to authorize is that which my telegram is meant to point out.

In order to have the benefit of the supervision which you say you can now, but probably not later, give the work, the Observatory agrees to the printing of six hundred copies in the terms of Mr. Engelmann’s estimate, but

without agreeing to any publication of the work for the present, either by sale or gift, or to the preparation of any title-page. The neglect of any of these conditions would seriously embarrass the Observatory, and might even make it impossible to pay for your work. In order to accommodate Mr. Engelmann, I have said six instead of five hundred, so that there may be a sufficient number of copies to allow of his having some for sale if circumstances finally permit it.

In printing the memoir, please take what care you can to have such typographical errors as German printers are fond of avoided; you will no doubt warn them against capital J for capital I, which I believe is their favorite blunder in setting up an English paragraph. On the whole, I do not suppose it necessary to stereotype or electrify the pages, although, if economy were unnecessary, I should have it done, especially on the account of the facility offered by doing it for changing the headlines of the pages, which might be desirable if the work should be transferred to the Bache Fund. But I do not regard this transfer as probable. Your wishes will of course have much influence in this matter, but I suppose it will make little difference to you in what way the work is published.

As soon as possible, send me two copies at least of the sheets; and to prevent delay by possible

Please, keep the journal of observations ready for the press at any time. As soon as the questions of the funds and title page are settled, I hope to be able to send you authority to bring out the work. I presume Mr. Engelmann can wait till then for payment; let me know about this, and if any advance is absolutely necessary, I will do my best to provide it in some way.
