My Lord,

Mr. C. S. Peirce, U. S. Coast Survey, is charged with the duty of connecting the pendulum work of our survey with those of Great Britain, and other European governments. With this view he is now in London, and states that it will greatly facilitate his work, if he can be permitted to swing his pendulums at the Kew Observatory. I have the

honor to request that Y. L. will kindly procure for him this privilege; as also such other facilities as are ordinarily accorded in similar cases.
