My dear chief,

I trust that Prof. Henry's view as to the succession at the Naval Obsy may induce Newcomb to hold on there, and so allow C. S. P. to be appointed to Harvard. Of the two I think the latter has more originality and creative power, has full at command a great mathematical resources as the first, and is the best observer. Such a place is not the best

 


possible one for Charley's special powers, but it is the next best, and his present place is but the third best.

Winlock has for many years [received?] from the Coast Survey #1.200  [il.] of what is splendid liberalism [?] are [?] the Bostonians [passenerr ?]!

Mr. Hein will send the [???] & state the law in the case of Miss James, Miss [Scholay? and  [il.] Suant [?] has [il.?] is assumed-  [il.]
