U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Office Washington, April 15th, 1880 Hon. John Sherman Secretary of the Treasury Sir, Under authority contained in your letter of the 13th instant for Assistant C. S. Peirce to proceed to certain points in Europe, I have the honor to request that he be appointed a special Disbursing Agent, to give bond in the sum of $1.500 for the faithful disbursement of such funds as may be necessary to defray the expenses of his journey.
