(Copy) Treasury Department Office of the Secretary Washington D.C., April 15, 1880 Mr. C. S. Peirce Assistant U. S. Coast & Geodetic Survey Washington D. C. Sir, You are hereby appointed as Disbursing Agent of the Department for the purpose of paying your own expenses in proceeding to certain points in Europe, and returning under Department instructions of the 13th instant. You will execute a bond in the sum of fifteen hundred dollars. I am, very respectfully      (sd) John Sherman      Secretary
