Letter from P. Patterson to General Ibáñez de Ibero
(Washington, 12.09.1877)

Spanish translation & annotations

Washington D C. Sept 12 1877

To his Excellency
General Ibañez,
President of the International
Geodetical Association, etc. etc. etc.

Sir,

Desirous of profiting by the discussions of the International Geodetical Association at their meeting at Stuttgart this year, I venture to present to you Mr. C. S. Peirce, Assistant in the United States Coast Survey, with the request that so far as may be convenient, he should be allowed to attend your meeting.

I have selected Mr. Peirce to represent the Coast Survey upon this occasion, because he has made some

experiments upon the flexibility of pendulum tripods, which already have been the subject of criticism, both favorable and unfavorable, and because I am informed that the same subject is likely to receive attention this year.

           Very respectfully,

            Your obedient servant,

Superintendent United States Coast Survey
