Dear Sir,

I don't think it would be well to make my pendulum experiments here at present. My result is admitted. It really is deserving of confidence within the usual limits of accuracy of pendulum work; and I think I had best stand to it, making a new absolute determination as soon as possible.

The shaky point about my work now is the flexure at Kew and I propose during August to straighten that out. Will you therefore instruct Mr. Farquhar to carefully pack the pendulum and Repsold stand & accessories and have them sent to me care of the American Consul General at Liverpool?

I regret to say that I have been quite

 

 ill with intermittent fever of late. Still, the work has not come to a stand-still.

P. S. July 13. Yesterday I attended by request a conference of the bureau of longitudes on the subject of the pendulum. I think they will adopt the course I recommended.
