London 1876 August 4
C. P. Patterson Esq. Supt. U. S. Coast Survey Washington D. C.
Dear Sir, I sail for Boston on Aug 8 in the Cunard steamer Marathon. I shall have with me about 30 boxes containing instruments, books, and papers, the property of the Coast Survey. About an equal amount will follow in a later steamer. Will you have an order issued from the Secretary to admit all these things free of duty? I regret very much that in consequence of returning in such haste some important though not absolutely indispensable matters remain unattended to. My vouchers will I hope be finished before I sail; but I am delayed by having had to send to Berlin to have some signed. Yours very truly & respectfully, C. S. Peirce
Note 16 Aug: F-- usual letter to (…) to Sec. & Treas to admit free of duty. E. G.
