Letter from Julius E. Hilgard to the Secretary of the Treasury

U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Office Washington, April 20th, 1883 The Honorable The Secretary of the Treasury Sir, I have the honor to request authority to send Assistant C. S. Peirce to England, France and Switzerland for the purpose of making certain experiments and observations requisite to complete the comparisons of the American standards of length and measures of gravity with those of European countries. Mr. Peirce to be absent not exceeding four months, and while travelling and so engaged to receive actual expenses under existing Treasury Regulations. The work contemplated is to settle some fundamental questions, and I deem it important to do it this year. Very respectfully, J. E. Hilgard Superintendent
