Letter from Charles S. Peirce to Julius E. Hilgard
(New York, 26.04.1883)

Spanish translation & annotations

April 26

My dear Sir,

It appears Alex: Brown & Sons wrote to the "Coast Survey" —to whom I know not— to ask what my vouchers would amount to during my European trip & were answered "about $350 monthly". In consequence, they won’t give me the credit I desire. But it is easy to see these expenses must amount

to more.

1st My pay for 4 months is $956.67.

2nd My actual subsistence must be near $500.

3rd Transportation to & from Europe and to the places named must come to $300 or $400.

4th Expenses connected with the work cannot be less than $150.

5th I am directed to purchase a Hardy’s noddy at a maximum of $200.

6th I am authorized to purchase other instruments for which some money

must be paid, if they are ordered.

On the whole, I think the vouchers must come to at least $2250.

I wish either you or Morgan would write without delay to Morton, Bliss, & Co. and say "The vouchers of Assistant Peirce under his instructions of April 24, which he has shown to you, must amount to at least $2250, and checks in his favor to cover the amount of his vouchers from April to August inclusive will be forwarded to

you".

I will direct Messrs Alex: Brown & Sons to notify you that they will not require these checks to be paid to them and that they can therefore be paid to other parties. I have broken off from them completely.

If you can't say the vouchers will amount to $2250, please mention some sum, to however small. It is clear that the sum named to Brown, $1400, was much too small. It wouldn’t cover my pay and

subsistence. I showed the bankers my instructions and they said it was plain it must amount to $3000. Of course, it won't; but that shows what business men would think such instructions could be carried out for.

Yours very respectfully

C. S. P.
