My dear Chief

I am of course greatly pleased with Charlie's letter and with the great success which he is having. It will undoubtedly be for the advantage of the Survey and of the scientific reputation of the country. I have taken a copy which I have shown to Lovering who is much pleased with it and he will show it to our president. I am glad to see that Randell is speaker, and I have the impression that Atkins was

not displeasing to you.

I have just come from the white mountains, wherer the hills have put on their wedding attire and are glorious to behold. Why were such beautiful forms given to the mountains, and why were they clothed upon with such gorgeous coloring. A man is mightier than a mountain; can it be that he too is destined to some more glorious costume than these gray hairs. But now for a secret. At a party the other evening —a beautiful young maiden hasten me aside and

committed a rape of the Lord upon this ancient head of mine. Shall I go to law about it. How are such crimes punished at the seat of government? Is there an act of congress applicable thereunto? Would Ben Butler be a wise lawyer in such a cause?

Good by my dear friend

Your ever sincere friend

Benjamin Peirce

Hon. C. P. Patterson
