(Paris, 13.01.1876)

C. P. Patterson Esq

Superintendent U. S. Coast Survey

Washington D. C.

Dear Sir,

I propose to contribute to the Coast Survey Series of treatises, a Treatise on the Determination of the Force of Gravity. It will fill two or three hundred pages of quarto, and therefore I propose to divide it into  five “Books” and prepare one of these for each of the five next volumes of the Report. I shall want a good part of a year to write the first Book. I send you a rough sketch of the plan of the whole treatise for your criticism; and I should be obliged to you if you would send this together with my other official letters since I have been abroad to my father who may have some suggestions to make. My address is and will remail till further notice Care of McCulloch & Co, Lombard Street, London.

My pendulum is now ready at Brunners, but I have not completed the examination of it. The vacuum chamber is not ready and I am beginning to think that Turretini has undertaken what he cannot perform. I shall have to begin swinging here next week with the old foot.

Yours very respectfully & truly,

C. S. Peirce

Assistant
