Dear Sir

I am obliged to you for your permission to pay Mr. Farquhar $120 but I dot not propose to avail myself of it. If so much more were going to be added to the appropriation it would be well enough. He deserves it perhaps of the people (!) but considering the amounts paid in the Survey I would not recommend it. I thought possibly that would be paid out in gold.

I enclose you my estimate of expenditures for next year which

I believe you will find as you expect them to be.

If my passport does not come in time for me to take it with me, I hope it will be sent after me.

With warmest thanks and adieus I remain

            Yours very truly
                 & respectfully

                           C. S. Peirce

C. P. Patterson Esq
Supit. U. S. Coast Survey

My address will be care of
