3 Bedford Place, Bloomsbury 1875 May 5 Dear Sir, I desire to go out to Richmond to see whether I must ask leave to build a pier, etc. etc. before I set in motion the machinery of correspondence which the Chairman of the Kew Committee finds necessary before I can be authorized

to swing my pendulums at Kew. I should like if convenient to make my visit also the occasion of seeing the apparatus Mr. Whipple was so obliging as to offer to set up for me and also of seeing the apparatus of the Arctic Observers. Thanking you for your kind assistance to my attaining my object, I remain Your obedient server C. S. Peirce Samuel Jeffery Esq. Director of the Kew Observatory Etc. etc. etc.
