Dear Sir,

I leave you 2 negatives of the sun (not at all good I regret to say) taken directly without having the image thrown up. The lens is of 40 foot focal length & four inches diameter. Is a single lens of crown glass. The idea is Mr. Winlock's. I leave also photographs of totality of last

eclipse with times of exposure marked on the backs.

I regret deeply not having been able this morning to come in time to see your instruments even if the atmosphere was not bright enough for a sight of some of your wonderful spectra. I hope I may be allowed another opportunity.

Yours faithfully

Charles S. Peirce
