Letter from Charles S. Peirce to Joseph Winlock
(Florence, 29.11.1870)

Florence, 1870 November 29 Dear Sir- Father has already communicated to you the principal points of my reconnaissances in Spain. The vice consul of the U. S. Mr. Geary should be notified a fortnight before you go there if possible. He will send a guide Jacob Lobo to find accommodations at Marbella. Mr. Adee the Secretary of Legation in Madrid expressed a wish to accompany you & I told him you would be very glad to have his assistance. I do not mean to go back to the observatory at all, because I wish to devote myself to Logic as much as I can. Don't fail to go to see the Alhambra & put up there at the Washington Irving not at the Siete Suelos where they passed false money on me

knowingly & otherwise swindled me. No guide is necessary but if you employ one, take an old man there who speaks very good English. I forget his name -- Ben … something. I hear you have had the kindness to arrange a telescope for me in a very ingenious way. Thank you very much. I think you have an excellent chance for good weather & I wish you may have it with all my heart, as much as I should wish that De La Rue might have bad weather if I were no [?] friend of him.
