My dearest Charlie,

I enclose Mr. Orpheus letter. I do not know whether the other has reached you but am quite sure it was forwarded to you. Your father went on to New York yesterday to be at the Harvard dinner this evening. He was much urged to go & as he has some ideas to put

into a speech concerning the college & its affairs he consented to go on. He has good weather for the journey so I hope he will enjoy it very much. I should have "dropped you a line" today at any rate to tell you that Helen presented us with a third boy on Sunday evening & that she & the little one are both nicely. As for the other children they are

lovely and growing every day in attractiveness. Sally I think is extremely pretty & such a spirited & bright little Peirce you never saw. Benjie is still my darling of the darlings. He is learning to read quite fast & tho' not remarkably forward in any way is so affectionate & satisfactory in every aspect that I would not have him changed a particle. He seems a good deal such a child as Jem was —tho' not as bright—  How goes the world with you my dear Charlie? I like to remember that you have so pleasant a companion with you. I like Harry James stories very much. Roderick Hudson is very clever.

I have a few engagements to promulgate in which perhaps you will take no special interest. Nevertheless I must not omit them. George Baty Blake your classmate is engaged to Miss Lowell, daughter of John A. Lowell. His wife [il.] died about 3 years ago & his father died this last July.

Then Willie Apthorp is engaged to one of the 5 Miss Lasigi -her name is Octavie- being the eighth child of her parents. Harry Williams is also engaged to Mrs. McBurney & this shall close the chronicle. All your friends

I believe are well. I am very much taken up just now with the children who require a little of grandmother oversight while their mother is hors de combat. Jem & Bertie are well. Will is feeling very poor. All Boston seems to be bankrupt. Adieu! My dear boy. Do not quite forget your ever loving & devout mother
