Letter from Charles S. Peirce to Carlile P. Patterson

4 Kirkland Place, Cambridge, Mass. Cambridge, Sep. 16 1880 C. P. Patterson Esq. Superintendent Dear sir, Knowing you are not well, I will not write a long letter. Father seems likely to remain in about the same condition for some time. Mr. Farquhar was never sent here and the instruments were not set up. It would now be to my personal convenience to do the work which was to have been done here in Baltimore. New and extensive plans of pendulum work have now to be elaborated. For this much study is required; and especially the results of the Allegheny-Ebensburg-York work are needed. This study can be conveniently carried on in Baltimore and at the same time the force of gravity there, important on account of the delicate measures of force

which are getting made there, can be incidentally determined. I therefore suggest that I have orders to proceed to Baltimore at once to complete the necessary measures for the spectrum metre, to determine gravity there, and to continue the office work of the party.
