Dear Sir

My monthly report has been kept back by my wanting to copy it and will go in a day or two. Meantime I have to acknowledge the receipt of yours of May 21.

My accounts have been kept back all this time by my not knowing wheter you succeeded in arranging to have gold paid out of the treasury for my party ex-

expenses' or not. Of course, if not all the charges will be different. I have written twice to Mr. Hein to ask this question once on the 3rd of April & once on the 30th of April but can get no word from him.

I beg that no premature closing of accounts at the end of the fiscal year shall now be allowed to interfere with my appropriations.

Before I sailed I requested Mr. Hein in writing to deposit money from time to time with my bankers to meet my draughts. I learn this morning from Messrs. French & Foote that no such money has been received & consequently I am paying interest in all I draw, although the larger part of it is to meet party expenses & for instruments. I have paid for the Repsold reversible pendulum.

I have been twice to Hamburg & shall have to go again I fear. I may also decide to go to St. Petesburg as I think it would be the best place to order a new transit.

I shall begin experiments here within a week.

Yours very respectfully

C. S. Peirce

Asst.
