Letter from Charles S. Peirce to John H. C. Coffin
(Berlin, 30.04.1876)

Spanish translation & annotations

Berlin, 30th April 1876

Dear Sir,

I can offer no remonstrance to the course you have taken in regard to the computations. I unfortunately found when I wished to make the computations in Paris that some of the papers had been left in Berlin & I expected to come here in a few days. But I was unavoidably detained for a long time & when I did get here everything was thrown into confusion by my contracting a fever so that from a conjuction of very unexpected cinrcumstances I was thrown utterly out of my reckoning. Your first letter never reached me.

Apart from the consideration of money

I feel most keenly the loss of this connection with the almanac & I hope it will not be a permanent one. If you cannot immeditely give me back the work, I beg that you will send me the data just the same as I desire to send in the computations yearly as a standing reminder of my desire to have the work again. If you will not do this, I shall send in computations from Leverrier’s tables. I now send computations of Saturn's Ring though I fear they are quite too late. It is useless now to explain slight discrepancies between this and last year's calculation.

Yours very respectfully & truly

C. S. Peirce

P. S. I found the following apparent errors in the Data sent

  Sun's Longitude
May 20 50º 16'          35"5
Dec 6 254º 16'        43"2

Saturn's distance (logarithm)

380º Day 0.97112

Something seems wrong about Jan 20th too but of this I am not sure.
