Dear Sir,

The following is a brief summary of the work of my parties since leaving Evensburgh.

The work at York has chiefly had reference to the vexed questions in regard to the flexure of the pendulum stand. An interesting series of experiments both statical & dynamical have been made there under various conditions & upon different stands. Several points have been brought out in this way; particularly that a weight upon the stand has no such influence as Plantamour maintains. I find a weight of 25 lbs absolutely without influence. Hence, Plantamour's experiments

with a fifth of this weight must be in error. We attempted to measure the time of elongation of a brass bar under a stretching weight but without success.

Experiments have also been made upon the rollers made to replace knife-edges. These have been disappointing, as the friction appears much increased.

At present, the length of the pendulum is getting measured. When this is done, we shall return to the flexure investigation, experimenting to ascertain by direct experiment whether the change of the period of oscillation corresponds to the statical or to the dynamical flexure.

The spectrum metre work approaches completion. Many new comparisons have been made at New York, chiefly at low temperatures. These continue to agree beautifully and the relative coefficients of expansion are found to be nearly what had been supposed from the slight variations of temperature at which former measures had been made.

The absolute coefficient of expansion of the rollers[?] has been determined. The use of these much improves the agreement of the measures already published in Silliman Journal. These measures absolutely refute the theory of the effect of the motion of the solar system in space upon the deviation, which theory has been upheld by Angström. The agreement of the new measures is even better than those previously communicated.

It had [...] to compare the decimeter with the decimeters of a metre scale of decimeters, and to determine the coefficient of expansion of a glass metre.

The office work is progressing and a paper on the flexure of the pendulum supports will soon be ready. A large amount of MSS for the Second Parte of the report on Gravity at European and American stations was destroyed by fire, but it can be replaced.

The observations for the longitude of Allegheny and Evensburgh have been reduced.

For the three nights relied upon, the results are good or, at least, pretty good, the extreme difference being less than 0.10; but a fourth night gives a widely different result which I am at present unable to understand.

Yours very respectfully,

C. S. Peirce
Asst
