Article / Prophecies make the news. The use of the future in Spanish television news on the Iraq Crisis (24 February-20 March 2003)

Abstract /

This article analyses the use of the anticipation of the future by Spanish main TV networks in their news about Iraq Crisis until War started (February 24th to march 20th, 2003). A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the /prime time /news of the state network, TVE1, as well of those of two private networks, Telecinco and Antena 3, is developed. Style, sources and consequences that these references about events to come had on the general introduction of the crisis are analysed. It will be shown how television journalism employs, in this period and regarding this issue, premonitions and how many of them lacked of a real foundation. Its aim, in some cases, was keeping the interest on the issue with a sensationalist tone. In others, they introduced war as the only exit to the crisis.
