Abstract /

This article explores docudrama’s main features as a mode of audiovisual representation, with a specific narrative structure, and subsequently with a seldom addressed but not less powerful rethorical dimension. In order to illustrate these points examples will be drawn from docudramas shown internationally during 1990-2000. The discussion on such problematic notions as: emotional and rational; fact and fiction; symbolic and imaginary; is brought forward by showing the blurring and melting of their assumed boundaries within docudrama. This in turn highlights the strengths of docudrama’s mode of representation as well as the challenges that as an audiovisual text faces and that as a cultural form poses to society.

Keywords /

Docudrama, postmodernity, film theory, narratology, rhetoric.
