Abstract /

Philosophy, it would seem, always comes on the scene after the fact, when it is too late, yet the contribution of philosophy is useful and needed in order to sort out the complexities of real life situations. In the case of human suffer ing and its highlighting in the media, the author proposes a "poetry of compassion", largely lacking in the media and indeed in society today. Whereas modernity placed the accent on action, postmodernity seems to be heralding the convenience of developing a passive conscience of human finitude, to show the world that success gained at the cost of individual sacrifice is not a universall shared concept.
