Abstract /

After many years of absence, there is now an increasing trend within the media towards trying to attract a larger audience by means of strong and shocking news stories, many of which are based on human tragedy and suffering. The Council of Europe and other institutions have become alarmed by this trend, and have appealed to the courts to monitor the use of the right to free expression in the case of contents that may be sensitive, offensive or harmful to a significant part of the population. The author presents a well documented case, drawn from different national ambits, concerning the current debate on this issue.
