Abstract /

The new widespread wave of the so called reality TV show depicting dramatic unpleasant scenes from real life apparently appealing to so many has sparked a new ethical debate. Producers defend them on the grounds of their mission of having to inform the public of what goes on in the world, and on the grounds of free expression, whereas their critics bemoan the business side of TV at the expense of human suffering and decry the fabrication of a false image of the world. The author appeals to the self-control and responsibility of the media in the face of the temptation of being able to gain profit from the darker side of human nature and society.
