Article / A History of the Concept of ”Information”: from the Formal Cause to the Fact (and Back)

Abstract /

The concept “information”, since the Ancient Greeks, was conceived in an active way: as a formal cause. In the first decades of a XVII Century there began a quantitative approach of the world, and its concept was understood as a fact. This process become more intense in the XX Century. In the last three decades some authors started to think that it was convenient to go back to an active concept. It is possible to make compatible both approaches: as a formal cause and as a fact. But a study of information as an action of knowledge is still pendent in this field.
