General Norms
The First Cycle plan of studies is designed to provide students with a complete and organic theological formation, which examines the entire content of Catholic doctrine.
Instruction is carried out over the course of five academic years. In the first two years, the student engages in studies of systematic philosophy and the history of philosophy, while at the same time being progressively introduced to consideration of the Christian faith. In the three following years, the student's theological formation is completed, via the ordered exposition of corresponding subjects.
The studies in Religious Education included in the second year, with their corresponding practical classes and other didactic exercises, are approved by the Episcopal Commission for Education and Catechesis of the Spanish Bishop's Conference as sufficient training for being a Professor of Religion. By fulfilling the corresponding requirements, the student may obtain the Ecclesiastical Declaration of Sufficiency to be Professor of Religion in Preschools, Primary and Secondary Schools.
All students have an advisor available to them, who will be assigned to them at the beginning of each academic year. This will be a professor of the School, who is in charge of providing personal advising and educational orientation concerning any issue related to the progress of the student's formation, and the optimal employment of the student's years at the university.
The classes, which each last one semester, are distributed by academic years.
To obtain the degree of Bachelor
Those students who have passed all classes of the First Cycle at the School, or at Centers affiliated with it, may directly take the examination for obtaining the degree of Bachelor.
Those coming from other Centers and who wish to obtain this degree, prior to taking the examination, must take classes at the School for at least one semester. The Plan of Studies during this semester will be determined by the Director of Studies. In order to be admitted to these studies, students must:
a) apply for admission to the School during the appropriate dates;
b) present, along with the application for admission, the pertinent documentation:
- a copy of the card that accredits your having passed the University entrance exams («Selectividad») or of having another degree which permits access to the Spanish University system, or of having passed the examination for those older than 25 years of age who lack the required prior studies. In the case of foreigners, a transcript of prior studies, accompanied by proof that these studies are sufficient for entering the University system in the student's own country. If you wish to obtain civil recognition of your ecclesiastical degree, you must first contact the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports to obtain recognition of your pre-Bachelor studies (or of any credits you wish to transfer from another Center), and you must have passed the Spanish University entrance examinations;
- a transcript accrediting any prior studies, whether pre-University or University-level, provided by the Center where those studies were carried out;
- if necessary, permission from the student's Ordinary or Superior.
The examination for the Bachelor degree is given during the months of June and September, on those dates which will be made public during the first five days of those months. This examination will consist of an oral examination, held in the presence of a Tribunal, concerning the subject matter corresponding to the studies performed in the First Cycle.
Because this exam concludes the student's Bachelor studies, the grade received on this examination will become the student's final overall grade; this grade will appear on the student's academic transcript.
