Must students who receive scholarships from the Assocation of Friends file a tax return?
The Association of Friends does not have the authority to advise its scholarship recipients in tax-related matters. It can only indicate the nature of the scholarships which it gives out.
In this regard, it is considered that the scholarships are within the specifications of art. 7 h of Navarran Law 22/1998, of December 30, concerning the Tax on the Income of Physical Persons. Duriing the scholarship period (generally the first two years of reception of the Friends Scholarship) the financial aid is considered exempt income. During the contract period (generally the fiinal two years of the Friends Scholarship) the scholarship payments received by the financial aid recipient are considered to be earnings from work.
In either case, for more information the Revenue Office (Hacienda) of Navarra publishes each spring on its web page an FAQ which responds to the questions asked by taxpayers.
