San Agustín de Hipona (354-430), uno de los más conocidos pensadores cristianos, es Doctor y Padre de la Iglesia. Nació en el 354 en Tagaste, Numidia (Argelia). Su madre, Mónica, fue una devota cristiana que dedicó toda su vida a la conversión de su hijo, siendo canonizada por la Iglesia católica romana. Agustín se educó como retórico en las ciudades de Tagaste, Madaura y Cartago.
Inspirado por el tratado filosófico Hortensius, de Cicerón, Agustín se dirigió a la filosofía en búsqueda de la verdad y probando en varias direcciones que le llevaron finalmente al cristianismo, llegando a ser Obispo y uno de los teólogos más reputados.
Del año 373 al 382, se adhirió al maniqueísmo, filosofía dualista de Persia muy extendida por el Imperio Romano de Occidente.
Agustín abandonó esta doctrina y dirigió su atención hacia el escepticismo. Hacia el año 383 se trasladó de Cartago a Roma, pero un año más tarde fue enviado a Milán como catedrático de retórica. Aquí se movió bajo la órbita del neoplatonismo y conoció también al obispo de la ciudad, san Ambrosio, el eclesiástico más distinguido de Italia en aquel momento. Es entonces cuando Agustín se sintió atraído de nuevo por el cristianismo.
Fue ordenado sacerdote el año 391, y consagrado obispo de Hipona en el 395, cargo que ocuparía hasta su muerte.
Agustín emprendió la batalla teológica contra el dualismo maniqueo, así como frente a los donatistas, los pelagianos, desarrollando al hilo de las disputas, gran parte de sus obras.
