Javier Uranga
José Javier Uranga was editor
of the daily newspaper “Diario
de Navarra” for more than 30 years and named President
of the Fundación Diario de Navarra in
2001. In August 1980, he survived
an assassination attempt by the terrorist group ETA in
spite of receiving 27 gunshot wounds. His undaunted courage
led him to continue his struggle for the freedom to express
his ideas as he saw fit. He formed part of the first group
of professors of the Institute of Journalism of the University Navarra,
now the School of Journalism, and taught there for ten
years.
He was awarded the Pluma de Oro de la Libertad de Prensa (Gold
Pen for Freedom of the Press) in 1981 by World Association
of Newspapers and the IV Rafael Calvo Serer Journalism
Prize in 2002.
