2003 • José Javier Uranga

José Javier Uranga was editor of the daily newspaper “Diario de Navarra” for more than 30 years and named President of the Fundación Diario de Navarra in 2001. In August 1980, he survived an assassination attempt by the terrorist group ETA in spite of receiving 27 gunshot wounds. His undaunted courage led him to continue his struggle for the freedom to express his ideas as he saw fit. He formed part of the first group of professors of the Institute of Journalism of the University  Navarra, now the School of Journalism, and taught there for ten years.

He was awarded the Pluma de Oro de la Libertad de Prensa (Gold Pen for Freedom of the Press) in 1981 by World Association of Newspapers and the IV Rafael Calvo Serer Journalism Prize in 2002.
