2000 • Antonio Fontán

 

Antonio Fontán is Professor Emeritus of the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, as well as journalist and politician. He was founder and editor of the news magazines “La Actualidad Española” and “Nuestro Tiempo”. He was director of the Institute of Journalism of the University of Navarra (today the School of Journalism). He was the editor of “Diario Madrid” from its renovation in 1966 until it was forcibly closed by Franco´s government in November 1971.

He is Honorary Life Member of the International Press Institute. He is the only Spanish journalist to receive the Press Freedom Award in recognition of his defense of the freedom of the press.
