Former president of Nicaragua. She strongly supported her husband, Pedro Joaquín Chamorro, editor of the daily newspaper “La Prensa”, in his efforts to convert Nicaragua into a democratic country under the dictatorship of Somoza. Following the assassination of her husband, she took over the direction of the newspaper and as its editor worked in favour of freedom and democracy.
