The Institute of Food Sciences of the University of Navarra (ICAUN) is looking for volunteers to participate in the Euroinnova Navarra Project on functional foods, the objective of which is to scientifically demonstrate the nutritional benefits of these products.

The study, in which the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology of the University also participates, needs the collaboration of normal to overweight/obese volunteers. “All participants will be placed on balanced diets, controlled and supervised by a team made up of Dietitians-Nutritionists, doctors, biologists and pharmacists. The diets will vary in length of time depending on the particular study assigned to each person,” explained Marta Cuervo, a Dietitian-Nutritionist working on the project.

According to Cuervo, the elements which make up the diets are called functional foods because, aside from supplying the body with nutrients, they provide additional benefits to our health which should be verified scientifically. “Any food product must comply with hygiene and safety regulations. Functional foods however, need to follow legislated criteria in Spain and Europe certifying that they contain the desired properties and/or reduce the risk of certain diseases,” said Marta Cuervo.

One University, Four Technological Centers and Thirteen Businesses

This research is meant to analyze the role of functional foods in the prevention and treatment of obesity and other similar afflictions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. “These sicknesses are progressively more common and are sometimes even fatal. It is therefore an urgent task to examine certain dietary effects in the prevention and treatment of these illnesses” continued Marta Cuervo.

This project, which is subsidized by the Government of Navarra, is made up of 18 institutions: 4 Technological Centers, 13 businesses from the Food and Agriculture Industry of the Autonomous Community, and the University of Navarra.

Those interested in participating in the study can contact the Institute of Food and Sciences by calling 650 669 388, or by sending an email to voluntariosnut@unav.es, where more information can be found on the project. The Institute of Food and Sciences carries out research projects, nutritional intervention, development and innovation, as well as advising for businesses and individuals related with Dietetics.
