The project of AH Asociados, directed by the professor of the University of Navarra Miguel Ángel Alonso del Val and his student Rufino Hernández, has won the International architecture competition in honor of the “Bicentenary of Argentinean Independence”. Thus, the urban landmark will be one of three new buildings which will give Buenos Aires a new air in 2010, the idea being to celebrate Argentinean Independence.
Another five professionals connected with the School of Architecture worked together with the directors: Professor Esperanza Marrodán; Darío Camisay and Verónica Gorri, both with the Master’s Degree in Architectural Design; the student Leyre Merinero; and Víctor Larripa, a 5th year Architecture student. Pablo Branchi and José Citroni also contributed to the project.
The competition challenged the participants to create an architectural plan for the Banco del Rio Plata in Buenos Aires. The North Harbor makes up one of the most representative places in the Argentinean capital, since new immigrants, entering the country, pass through this place while looking for a new future.
In addition to the proposal of AH Asociados, two others were selected: “El Mirador” and “Las Agujas”. The panel of judges was made up of, among others, the president of Argentina Cristina Fernández Kirchner; the head of Government of Buenos Aires, Mauricio Macri; and the president of IRSA (Inversiones y Representaciones S.A.), Eduardo Elsztain.
About the project: “La Puerta del Plata”
The Project by AH Asociados is titled “La Puerta del Plata” and consists in a closed longitudinal building with an asymmetrical shape. Located in the northern harbor of the port of Buenos Aires, the building is connected to the administrative center of the city while also extending out into the Río Plata.
Its curved form allows it to reflect the water, multiplying the lights’ effects. Facing the city, the building displays a more urban side. There is also a backdrop for projections and other features that can be clearly seen from the stands, enabling the harbor to fulfill its function as a unifying public area.
