The University of Navarra has chosen the initial projects for its new research center in Humanities and Social Sciences

There are approximately 200 researchers at the Institute for Culture and Society involved in international and interdisciplinary projects on the challenges in today’s world

The University of Navarra has chosen the first projects to be carried out at the new research center in Humanities and Social Sciences, called the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), in which nearly 200 researchers from around the world are already working. The projects hove been selected by expert national and international examination committees.

The programs chosen are all part of the four lines of research of the ICS. Thus, the projects: “Boundaries and culture,” directed by the philosophy and law professor Caridad Velarde, “Mind and brain. Biology and subjectivity in philosophy and contemporary neuroscience,” directed by the professor of philosophical anthropology José Ignacio Murillo, and “Public speech. Persuasion and interpretation strategies,” coordinated by Chair Professor of Spanish Language Manuel Casado, are included in the area of Globalization, Human Rights and Interculturalism.

The following project are to be conducted in the area of Family, Education and Society: “Emotional Culture and Identity,” coordinated by Ana Marta González, professor of moral philosophy; “Education of Human Affectivity and Sexuality,” directed by Jokin de Irala, professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health; and lastly “Religion and Civil Society,” directed by Rafael Alvira, Chair Professor of Philosophy.

In the area of Contemporary Art, professor of Literary Theory and Compared Literature Álvaro de la Rica will be in charge of a significant portion of the research carried out. Chair Professor of World Economy Luis Ravina is going to work on the ideas for new projects in the area of Poverty and Development. Lastly, the proposal entitled “Natural law and practical rationality,” lead by Alejandro Vigo, professor of the History of Philosphy, will cover all of the different lines of research.

Collaboration from international experts

The ICS helps fulfill one of the principal objectives of the University of Navarra: to further the study of Humanities and Social Sciences. According to Jaime García del Barrio, General Director of the Institute: “The ICS will promote interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue as the basis for fruitful, serious, original research focused on finding valuable solutions for society.”

The institute will promote research by the professors of the University of Navarra, in collaboration with international experts, with the goal of conducting quality, scientific projects that are socially relevant in the areas mentioned above.

Although they are already working in different locations, the professors will eventually conduct their research in what is now the School of Economics and Business Administration when construction of the new Building of Economics, Law and Master’s Degrees has finished.
