Pamplona, 20th July, 2011.-
The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the European Center for Injury Prevention (ECIP) as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Injury Prevention. With this recognition ECIP becomes the first center in Spain in the area of injury prevention and one of the seven centres in the field in Europe. Currently there are over 800 WHO collaborating centres in over 80 Member States, eleven of them in Spain.
One of the criteria for this designation was the successful completion of at least two years of collaboration with WHO in carrying out jointly planned activities. The process culminated with the elaboration of an agreed work plan which includes the following activities:
the development and assessment of injury coding and injury surveillance systems
the development of injury-related indicators for monitoring injuries;
and the development of teaching materials and capacity building in injury surveillance in collaboration with other national and international universities
Effective for a period of four years, this designation implies a recognition of ECIP’s past efforts to contribute with its work to reduce the burden imposed by traffic-related deaths and injuries to societies world-wide.
