Double Degree in Biology and Biochemistry
General Information The Study Plan of the department of Biology offers as electives all of the classes required for the degree in Biochemistry, which makes it possible to study for both licentiates simultaneously. The students take simultaneously the courses required for the upper division cycle of Biology and those required for the degree in Biology, taking 165.5 credits in two years, which is a total of 21.5 credits more than those required for the last two years of Biochemistry (144 credits) and 10.5 credits more than those required for the last two years of Biology (155 credits). In addition, with an appropriate selection of elective classes, the students may obtain the specialization "Fundamental y Sanitaria" which is allowed for in the Plan of Studies of Biology. Those students who are interested in completing the double licentiate must complete the first two years of Biology. They can apply for admission to the double licentiate in the third year of Biology studies from the Estudios Conjuntos of the Secretary of the School of Sciences before May 15th of that year. In order to be admitted, the student must have passed 100% of the credits from the first cycle (121.5 Core, 21 Obligatory, 39.5 Internship and 8 open electives). he student remains registered in Biology, taking the classes which are indicated in the Plan of Studies for the double degree as optional or open electives. Carrying out double studies in Biology and Biochemistry is a more demanding and vigorous study plan, thus it is necessary that those students interested first speak with their academic advisor about the possibility of carrying out the studies in five years (the application needs to have the advisor´s signature); the possibility of taking six years for the double degree always exists. Obtaining the Degrees In order to obtain the degree in Biochemistry, once all the studies in the Double Licentiate are passed, whether in June or in September, the student must apply to the General Offices for the recognition of the class work done, presenting a letter in the Secretarial of the School of Sciences. It is important not to delay the application so that the degree is validated in the correct academic year. There is an additional charge of 10% of the price of the 144 credits from the Biochemistry degree. Once both Licentiates are finished, the student will have two academic transcripts and two different degrees. Equivalent credits For the Biochemistry degree, as in Biology, a maximum of 12 credits may be given (each credit equals 25 hours of work) equaling In-program electives, for internships, academic works, or for the realization of a project. If a student has carried out an activity of this type in Biology, the credits may NOT be con validated for Biochemistry. That is to say, the same credits for an activity may not apply simultaneously to the two degrees. It is possible, however, to apply part of the credits toward one degree and part toward the other.
