The 20th century has been called the Century of Biology. Today, more than 80% of applied basic research is performed by biologists and/or biochemists. The recent projects in sequencing the human genome and many other living creatures open new doors to a scientific understanding which will make possible, in the near future, new technologies which can improve our way of life. Today's society needs professionals who are able to be leaders in this challenging field; both of the degree programs we offer are designed to respond to this growing social demand.
Some of these areas of challenge have already become reality: the analyses of DNA, the genome and its proteins, systems biology, genetic and cellular manipulation, transgenic organisms, etc. have already begun to have direct applications in biomedicine, food science and industry.
