EMOTIONAL CULTURE AND IDENTITY (CEMID)
In contrast with previous eras, when the emotional dimension of human beings was less accentuated, contemporary societies are marked by a pervasive emotional culture.
The inclusion of the emotional element in almost every academic field strongly reflects the active presence of emotions in all spheres of human and social life. Along these lines, the present project aims to diagnose contemporary societies through the lens of the increasing relevance of emotions.
Through the analysis of emotions in various cultural and social manifestations, CEMID's aim is to clarify the emotional regime of late-modern societies, as opposed to early modern ones, in order to find out how this emotional regime impinges upon contemporary lifestyles and definitions of identity.
To study the nature and function of emotions in social action and the construction of identity our strategy is twofold:
a) On the one hand we aim to design a theoretical and conceptual frame which will allow us to study social action, paying close attention to the emotional dimension of the human being
b) On the other hand, to implement applied studies that serve as a documental source as well as proof of the theoretical framework
The synergy between the two parts, theoretical elaboration and empirical or applied studies, is therefore essential for the project.
